A glass sphere of lattice shells nested one inside another, with long barbed spines radiating out into the dark.
Radiolarians are single-celled sea creatures that build skeletons of silica, often less than a millimetre across. Ernst Haeckel drew hundreds of them for his plates Kunstformen der Natur, published from 1899 to 1904.
